Project Description

FOSTERING LITERACY

Our most important service is education. Education for both the children and the parents of the families we serve offers a long-term solution to the challenges of the working poor. Through our education programs, we teach the basic skills and instill the self-confidence that will enable our clients to become self-sustaining, productive members of our community.

Holy Family School continues to have impressive results and most of our graduates have been offered continued education in other private schools at no cost to their families. 29 students in two grades make up the current student body of Holy Family School and these students continue their education here through 8th grade. The children are from very low-income immigrant families and receive a quality education with the core components of reading, spelling, math, science, geography, social studies, and technology as well as enrichment opportunities in faith, music, dance and art.

The children’s hardworking families cannot afford the tuition of a private education, so Holy Family School parents pay with a commitment. Students’ parents come to the Center one day a week to enhance their own education. Each has personal English tutors and participates in computer and keyboarding classes. In addition to English as a Second Language (ESL) classes, St. Francis Center also provides parents continuing education for the General Equivalency Development (GED) test.
